NOTES BY "ACHILLES." The young jockey, Herbert Carmont, who met with an accident at the Otaki races ou Wednesday week, still lies in the same condition at the Otaki Hospital, and has shown no signs as yet of regaining consciousness. L. H. Hewitt returned from Sydney on Wednesday, and was present at Trentham in the afternoon, but did not have a ride. Out of seven mounts. on Wednesday, at the Wellington R.C. Meeting, D. Price, i first horseman, for the Hon. J. D. Ormond, rode five winners and one second. He rode Martello in the Wainui Handicap. Golden Gate, winner of the Flying Handicap at Trentham, is a three-year-old colt by San Francisco — Roie, and is owned by the Hon. J. D. Ormond, whose horses won four races during the day. Achilles is reported to be in capital condition. I Noctuiform's weight in the Cambridgeshire Handicap, one mile and a furlong, to be run on Wednesday next, is Bst 2lb. The Final Handicap, run at Randwick, resulted in a terrible surprise, as it fell to Vanadium, who stated at 20 to 1. There were fifteen starters,, including Melodeon. On returning to the paddock those associated with Melodeon were questioned as to the horse's running, and the inquiry was adjourned until the Bth inst. The winner's running was " also likely to be inquired into, as he ran absolutely last in the Trial Handicap on the first day, and as both races were the same distancej and were run in the same time, Vanadium had a right to te questioned. Solution cost Mr. R. Patterson i? 100. As a two-year-old she won for him .£l7O, > at three .£lOl7, at four *y4O, and at five years old — a total of .£5334 in stake money alone, besides which no doubt Mr. Patterson would clear a big -3um in wagers. As he got ,£4935 for tho mare last week, it will be seen that sh» has been a veritable gold mine for the , Wellington bookie. The Caulfield Stakes she annexed on Saturday last for her new owner (Mr. F. P. Reynolds) was worth • £450. . This concluded the business. There is to be no telegraph office at Ellerslie this season. Multifid's owner reckons on having his horse fit and well for the New Zealand Cup. •
