IMPERIAL PROBLEMS.

Some Good Advice from the Times. Press Association.— Telegraph.— Copyright. Received October 19, 7 a.m. LONDON, October 18. Tho Times publishes another letter on the New Hebrides question by Mr. W. E. Johnson, M.H.R., and commenting on his statements, describes them as significant, adding : " Nor is it difficult to read in Mr. Deakin's language a suggestion of doubt as to whether the Imperial authorities, on their side, have done their best for the maintenance of the Union Jack in the Pacific." 'Ilie Times proceeds to urge that as such questions as that connected with New Hebrides cannot be considered apart from the international situation, colonial statesmen should be brought into constant touch with tho problem of the Imperial foreign policy as a whole, and not merely at tlio point more immediately within their own vision. They should, conversely, be enabled to show the Foreign Office what points are really vital to them, and thus cause the Imperial general policy to be shaped by an intimate realisation of colonial aspirations, which it at present lacks.
