FIRST DAY.

(Per United Press Association . WELLINGTON, October 1". The Wellington Racing Club's Sprint? Meeting opened to-day in ideal \\\ at. . The course was in splendid condition, and the attendance was excellent. The totalisator machines were controlled directly by the club itself, and the new machines worked accurately, though not with that smoothness which will come by experience. The sum of £11,553, inclusive of the double machine, was put through the totalisator, as against <£ 9992 for the. corresponding day of last year. The winning combination, Clanchattan and Golden Gate, paid .£55 13s for each pound invested. Results: — October Hack Hurdles. — Pawa 1, Sardonyx 2, Cyrus 3. Rookby and Hydroscope also started. Hydroscope fell. Won easily. Time, 3min 20 l-ssec. Dividend, £5 Bs. Shorts Handicap. — Medallist 1, Declination 2, Ballarat 3. Captain Shannon, Marguerite, Petticoat, and St. Bill also started. Won by a length. Time, lmin 2 3-ssec. Dividends, £5 13s and £1. Rimutaka Hack Handicap. — Intelligence 1, Rosegrove 2, William 3. Scratched — Arm amen to, Kuku, Lady Beresford, and Highland Fling. Won comfortably. Time, lmin 17 l-ssec. Dividends, .£3 and <£3 3s. Wellington Handicap.—Clanchattan 1, Zimmerman 2, Ghoorka 3. At the four furlongs post Boomerang ran into the premier position. Entering the straight the field closed up, Mystification and 'Frisco being- prominent. Zimmerman appeared to have the race in hand when Clanchattan came through with a rattle and beat the colt by half a length. Time, 2min lOsec. Dividend, £8 2s and £1 11s. Flying Handicap. — Golden Gate 1, De Witte 2, Contender 3. Mungista also started. Golden Gate was never seriously troubled. Time, lmin 16sec. Dividend, £3 9s. Wellesley Stakes.— Eona 1, Elevation 2, Finery 3. Also started — Goldbeater, Pearl Reef, Gold Crest, and Tho Boyne. Won all the way. The time recorded (49$ sec) serves to show what a pace the winner set his field. Dividends, £1 16s and <£1 9s. Wainui Handicap. — Martello 1, Aeolus 2, Rosegrove 3. Scratched — Maui. Won by two lengths. Time, lmin 31 l-ssec. Dividends, ,£4 7s and £3 He. Spring Hack Handicap. — Pytchley 1, Devonia 2, Sherlock Holmes 3. Scratched — Splendid Idea, Lord Soult, William, Intelligence, Kitchenmaid. Won easily. Time, lmin 2 2-ssec. Dividends, £3 17s and £1 3s.
