J. STANBURY v. W. WEBB.

At a meeting of the Stanbury-Webb committee last evening it waa reported that the canvassing had resulted in £103 18d having been collected and promised towards the stake money. The sum of £147 is still required to make up the total amount wanted, but as the canvassers have not yet completed their respective districts it is. hoped th^t the necessary money will b© forthcoming. M«ssra D. Dustin and W r S. Corby were deputed to interview Webb and ascertain his views as to what arrangements would be most advisable re his proper training for the contest.

The letter and articles referred to by Stanbury's backers in their cable should arrive to-morrow, and a meeting of the committee will be called directly they come to hand to consider same.

Sydney papers received by the last mail show that J. Mitchell, who was to have rowed W. Fogwell last week for £100 aside and the championship of the Northern districts, will come over with Stanbury. It is evidently their intention to leave for Wanganui at an early date, and the appearance of these two fine scullers on our river will be awaited with great interest. It is safe to say that the Stan-bury-Webb match will create a great boom in rowing and do an immense amount of good for that grand sport in Wanganui. That the three local rowing sheds will gain in membership and enthusiasm as a result goes without saying, and at the came time the suitability of the Wansranui Hiver for such contests will be advertised far and wide.
