The Stormbird will return to the usual port again toaight. It is doubtful if the Putiki will get away for Wellington and Gisborne tonight, owing to the loading of the spiral pipes — their long length and the care with which they have to be handled — being a slow job. The Waverley this morning arrived from Westport, bringing a load of 2000 railway sleepers for the Public Works Department. The vessel will sail to-night for Wellington, Nelson, and the Coast. Last evening the Huia returned to Wellington, and the Ripple departed for Greymouth. The Muritai continued her voyage from Opunake at 9.45 this morning, and is due here to-night. If possible she will work out her cargo and leave again before noon to-morrow on the return journey north. The barquentine Alexa departed from Sydney yesterday for Grafton, New South Wales, to load hardwood for Lyttelton and this port. The Paparoa arrived at Plymouth on Saturday last from Wellington. The Times says that despite the fire which occurred on the Bürgermeister Hackmann at Capetown, the New Zealand cargo appears to be undamaged. — The Stormbird this morning brought part of the Wanganui cargo which was brought to Wellington in the above vessel. The Somerset, which left Liverpool on the 21st July for Australian and New Zealand ports sailed from Sydney yesterday for Auckland, in continuation of her voyage.

The New Zealand Shipping Company are evidently satisfied that they have got hold of a good thing in the Clayton fire extinguisher, and there is no doubt that their comparatively fortunate experiences in connection with the wool fires must have confirmed their first good opinion of the apparatus. According to "Fairplay" it has now been fitted to the Ruapehu, Kaikoura, Kaipara, Papanui, Tongariro, and Rakaia. Other companies are also casting a favourable eye on'it.
