JAS. STANBURY v. W. WEBB.

BY "VICTOR."

The •members of the committee appointed to canvass the town for -subscriptions towards, the Stanbury-Webb fund are reminded of the meeting at the Council Chambers at 7.30 to-morrow evening. The combined committee — the Christmas Carnival and Sculling — will meet at 8 o'clock the same evening at the same place. I have received the following note from Mr W. J. Aynsley, the well-known tobacconist and hairdresser, of Ridgway Street: — "Dear "Victor," — I have much Eleasure in intimating to you that I shall c glad' to contribute £5 5s towards the Stanbury-Webb- iculling match fund. I recognise 'that thn is going to be the biggest advertisement Wanganui has ever had, and hence am anxious to give my support' to 1 a project which must benefit our town in many ways. That thousands will visit Wanganui to see the contest I have no doubt, and I earnestly trust that the promoters will be au ported in the public spirit which they deserve. I believe in supporting anything which will tend to wards .the. wjtyancement of our town, as I feel" sure this race will. In addition, this match appeals to me as a sportsman, as I know it must to thousands of others, and rowing is a grand, manly sport, worthy of encouragement everywhere. Whether or not -Webb will prove equal to defeating Stanbury remains to be seen, but it would be. a grand thing for New Zealand, and especially for' Wanganui. if. the local scalier should succeed. Good luck to him, anyway."
