KAITOKE PUBLIC HALL

Yesterday afternoon the Rev. J G. Chapman opened the Church Hall which the Wesleyans have recently erected at Kaitoke, where it will fill a long-felt want. Despite the fact that the weather was unfavourable a large congregation assembled. Mr Chapman preached an appropriate eermon, and then referred to the steady increase in the numbers who attended the services at Kaitoke necessitating steps being taken to erect the Church Hall. A Sunday school was started twelve months ago, which has flourished wonderfully. The accommodation in the school house being uncomfortable and insufficient, Mr J. H. J. Bowater offered a site for a Wesleyan Church. This was thankfully accepted, and the members of the church being called together took the matter up moat enthusiastically. It was, however, decided that a church hall would meet the requirements of the district best, as it might b« used for a social as well as religious purposes. Several settlers gave their services, and the result is that the hall— which will eoafabout 130 persons, is now erected. An evening service was conducted by Mr Varney, and was greatly appreciated. A social function will shortly be held in connection with the opening.

At the Police Court this morning a man was fined £1 and costs 9s for driving a vehicle over the railway line at Aramoho, after such a time as he should have come to a. standstill to allow a train to pass. A prohibition order was issued against a woman. Ernest Taylor was remanded to appear on Friday next, at 10.30 a.m., on three charges, two of obtaining goods under false pretences at Hawera and Feilding, and one of forgery of a cheque at Marton. Messrs J. H. Kecsing and A. P. London, J's. P. presided.
