EGMONT -WANGANUI HUNT CLUB

BY "TALLY-HO."

On Saturday the last meet of the season for thi« end of the district took place at Mr J. A. Blair's, Rapanui.

It is a pity that the elements, were so uukind and the day so-cold, stormy, and boisterous, for a record attendance was anticipated., most of the vehicles in towu having been hired for the outing, but of course the state of the weather precluded all but the enthusiastic from attending. However, about 70, turned out, half of them being followers, who were rewarded with two excellent runs, and the spectators with a splendid view of the whols of the proceedings from along the road, which, by the way, is unfortunately a quagmire, and a* disgrace to the local county council. Mr lilair had spared no trouble in laying out a nice line of country; the going was good, fences flagged off and easily negotiable, excepting two live fences, which brought down half * dozen tyros. The drag consisted of a dead hare, smeared with aniseed, which took the" hounds along at a pace last enough to satisfy all grumblers,, who have been decrying the loss of acent, pace, apd stamina in our pack. Never have I seen them run better, and it only showed that, where the scent is good, the pack will do its duty faithfully. On Saturday, although the dragsmen got a good start, the hounds caught them up, and one, well mounted, had to pick up the drag and sticak across country a la Dick Turpin for the terminus. Again we were pleased to -welcome half, a dozen of the Rangitikei Club, whom, wo would have liked to have experienced, more uivmuable weather. Beginning at Mr Cullinane's gate fcfc Southern Orove. we were led over a gorse*> a wire, then another gorsc — a "corker." which brought down a lew — then over four move wires, up the road for a short distant c. ovor a wiie into a lovely stretch of fields, across three wires, followed .bf ;i huge hawthorn, then a treble of rails, a boxthorn, across a turnip field, over another wire, finishing with a treble of wire and two- goiwe teueeson to Mr Blair's lawn — a tiuiy delightiul run. A tier a short breathing space, which enabled the spectators iv vehicles to extiicih' r'n-n.M lyes iioin the muddy road, wo were t.ikeu lor another splendid run over a (iuil.tr (.our&e — n.<n*tly goree,, tinib'uijg; the nation 1906 with the pleasing siunciluni of ha\mg i.dd au enjoyable afti rn<iou s -.nort Un v.inch we feel indebted to Ales ; is l iiliiu.uK\ liandley, Bason and liliiir, o\i % r whose piopcities we ran. ilid 131,.ir now kindly asked us all in to pjit.iirf <>1 so 'no (u'hcions afternoon tea. pnv,.d. cl ovei hy me -Misses Blair, which we ihm-oiiohlv en,i>yed.
