HARBOUR BOARD.

The usual monthly- meeting of the above was held last evening. Present — Messrs J. JJ. Murray (in the' chair), A. Higgie, \V. Ritchie, W. E. Morgan, 11. Neilson, A. Elliott, A. Hatrick, A. G. Bignell. An apology was received- for the absence of Mr Bassett.

MINIFIES. — llie minutes of the previous meeting wei'e read and confirmed. BANK BOOK.— The bank Look was laid on the table. It showed a credit balance of £897 8s 4d. RAILWAY DEPARTMENT.— In reply to a request from the Board that the Railway Department should contribute to tho Board a proportion of the original cost of a- training wall erected in the Wanganui River, tho secretary of the Department wrote, stating* that the half-tide wall erected by the Board was erected for a specific purpose, viz., for training the river. The work done, it was added, by tho Department had not increased the Board's expense nor caused any loss, and in these circumstances the Department could not see its way to contribute any portion of the original cost of the wall. — The opinion was expressed that the Department had not acted fairly in the matter. — Letter received. NEGLECT.— Mr Hatrick drew attention to tho fact that the Marine Department hud not had the courtesy to reply to a communication, sent months ago, from the Board on an important question, in reference to the handling of goods on the Wanganui wharves and the renewal of the Board's agreement. lie spoke strongly on the way the Government Depart-inont.-j treated the Board in thus ignoring their correspondence. — It was decided •to send a wire couched in stroug terms to the Secretary of Railways on the ' subject. CASTLECLIFP SPORTS.— An application from the Castleeliff Sports Association for the use of London Park on BoXing Day was granted, subject to them repairing any damage. A PROTEST.— Measra Br.ddeley, Forlong, and Co. wrote stating that they considered it unreasonable to expect rent for a certain section on Nixon's flat, since the paddock was uoav useless owing to the change in the river's course. — The iiecretary was instructed to write Messrs Baddeley, Forlong, and Co. and insist upon payment, at the same time intimating that any application for reduction of rent owing to loss of laud could be considered subsequently. APPLICATION.— In answer to a request from the Sailing: Club for permission to use (during the Board's pleasure) tho shed at Manson's building for the storage of gear, eto., it was decided to inform the club that tenders for the building in question are being invited, and that the application cannot, therefore, be granted, but that arrangements may lie made to provide a cite for the erection of a boat shed. PILOT'S REPORT.— The Pilot's report showed that there was little if any changv in the state of Vac bar during the month. There was a depth of 10ft Sin on the bar at high -water spring tides, and 7f.t 8111 it high water neap tides. The r lower reach and entrance to the river- arc fairly good, and the upper flats a"re slig-htlv in.oroved. Tho depth of water at the Heads Wharf had not increased. BELDGE. — Captain Pope's report of the soundings taken at the Town Bridgeshowed that there had been a silting Tip '■U'ound all' the' cylinders, except the sec>nd from the Taylorville side. BARGES.— It was resolved that Mr Reynolds be instructed to prepare specifications and call tenders for the construction of four hopper barges. It was further resolved that tenders close within a month, 'md mat the barges be completed within throe months after the closing of the 1 tenders. It was also decided to 'ask Mr Reynolds to construct the barges, •so that j they may subsequently be used for the conveyance of stone. j NOTICE OF MOTION.— Mr Higgie gave notice that at next meeting he would move that the motion altering the hour of meeting- be rescinded, and that the Board rcvort to the old meeting time, 2.30 /clock, iuslend of 7.45. SQUATTEPtS.— ResoIved, that squatters on the foreshore below the gasworks be given notice to quit. The Board then adjourned.
