THE ASHBURTON SLY GROG CASES

EIGHTEEN INFORMATIONS AGAINST NINE PERSONS.

PERJURY SUSPECTED.

ASHBURTON, December 1.

The sly-grog cases are being heard before Mr V. G. Day, S.M. There are 18 informations against 9 persons. Samuel Alexander, against whom there was one information for selling liryior in a prohibited district, was sentenced to two months' imprisonment. This is the second time Alexander has been sentenced to imprisonment for the same offence. Julia Hylands (two informations) w*as fined £10 and costs on the first, and a conviction was entered up on the second. The police aro to make inquiries into the evidence of one witness for tho defence with a view to further proceedings, th© Magistrate remarking that he did. not believe his evidence. The other case 3 are proceeding.

In the sly-grog cases, H. P. Milaom (one information) was fined .£3O. The Court is still sitting.
