Mi> T. B. Williams at Eastown Mr T. B. Williams addressed the electorsof Eastown last evening, there * being a good attendance, particularly of ladies. Mr R. Neilson, who was in the chair, introduced the candidate . in a graceful speech, paying a high tribute to Mr Williams' integrity, as displayed during his long residence in Wanganui. Mr Williams, who spoke on the same lines as in previous speeches, Avas attentively listened to, and frequently applauded He again expressed his opinion that voting should be made compulsory, and that electoral rights, returnable in seven days, should be issued. In reply to questions, he said that he thought a grant should be made to Catholic schools, butr as the matter must emanate from the Government, no private member had power to propose it; and that no arrangement had been come to at the interview with the Premier that afternoon. Considerable interest was taken in hLe Borough Council by-election and also in the general elections of members of Ibe Waitotara County Council, which tuck place to-day. ,A large crowd gathered to hear Mr Stevenson at tho Ridgway Street corner last night. The speaker advocated the Hare-Spehce system of electing representatives. Referring to the borrowing policy, he contended that the people did -not ..get the money, and all that happened was to put our own money into circulation. Every form of indirect taxationon food, clothing, and implements met with severe condemnation. The Wellington correspondent of the .Auckland Star states that private advices indicate a likelihood of Auckland and Wellington being visited about Easter next by three Japanese warships which took part in the memorable Tsushima engagement.
