Mr John McLachlan at Aahburton.

ASHBURTON, November 8.

Last night Mr John McLachlan, the Bitting member, addressed the electors, and was favourably received. H:> was in favour of allowing tha present licensing law to ! remain, but thought the system of State control would be preferable to so much sly-erog selling. On the land question he favoured the- optional 3ystem of tenure, and was against any further leases in perpetuity being grai.t-jrl. ,HV strongly urged the further acquisition of larg-s estates for closo settlement purposes of short ' leases, and would stop the aggregation of land, which «.ns so prevalent. He was opposed to the referendum for the Bible ■ iff schools and State aid to Catholics, and favoured continuing the present secular 1 system. He favoured the* State printing and distributing free school books, was ' against the Civil Service Board,, and in " favour of the present method of appointments to public . service. A vote of thanks and confidence was carried.

Mr Hogan 's Mosstown committee meets this evening at Mr Brooks' house, and the Eastown and Sedgrebrook committees at Mr Hogan's houss, Eastown.
