AUCKLAND v. WANGANUI.

In view of the above fixture next Tuesday, tlie following remarks on the Auck-land-Tarnnaki match, taken from the Taranaki Herald, will be read with interest : — "The visitors' forwards wctc a stronger all-round pack than the Taranaki lot, and, as if was essentially a forward tussle, they had the game fairly well in hand. Kiernan, the Auckland skipper, had his team •well organised, and gave the backs a. fair share of work to do, while the home team, being beaten in the forwards, and not given many chances with the ball, the backs were not able, to show to any advantage^ Tho match was disappointing, in that the football shown was not of a high order, but with- the culling out which has taken place deterioration was expected. On . the day's play Auckland was the better team by more than the 0110 point by which they were the victors. "So far as individual play is concerned, Kiernan was the best back on the field, and was"' seconded by Hardgreaves, who, though getting few chances in attack,, was sound on the defence, and kicked with great judgment. Kiernan showed his versatility behind tho scrum, and was mainly responsible for the offensive tactics. Todd, at five-eighth, was very safe in his position, and his activity got him out of a difficulty once or twice. Magee, who has been playing for the Star Club a good por-' tion of the season, occupied centre-threer quarter position with credit, defending surely and kicking wisely. Wynyard and Twiname, young players, were fair, but looked as if they were capable of something better. Newdick, at full, had little to <io. Tyler and JPraseT. especially tlie latter, were smart and aetivo on the respective wings; the "hookers," Dunning and Herring, were a good pair, while in the general struggle McGuire (2), Francis, and Bonella stood out prominently."
