Times' correspondent, sceptics contend that President Roosevelt would not attempt to continue to compromise the quarrel if convinced that Russia and Japan had said their last word. He adds that De Witte's and Professor Maarten's published' criticisms of Count Lamsdorff for lack of pliancy on the compromise and for unwillingness jto resort to arbitration must comj>el I j^e/i©us attention at Peterhof.
