EGMONT-WANGANUI HUNT CLUB.

ANNUAL RACE MEETING. The above gathering was brought to a successful conclusion after we had gone to press yesterday. The officials of the club are to be heartily congratulated on tho success of the meeting, which was in every way a most enjoyable one. The attendance was very satisfactory, the weather delightful, and the racing most interesting, some of the finishes being particularly close, while some good jumping was witnessed. The starting by Mr C. H. Chavannes was right up to his best standard, and that Mr George Morse (the handicapper) had exercised his usual excellent judgment in framing the weights was evidenced by the running. Mr. F. Moffatt (the hon. secretary) and his efficient staff left nothing to be desired in the manner in which they attended to their duties. In the Ladies' Bracelet, . which race, by the way, was a chapter of accidents, Mr Budge Gordon, had the misfortune to have his collarbone broken as the result of his mount (Jonquil) falling and rolling over him at the hencoop in the Recreation Ground. The horse jumped the' wire fence and made off down the Cemetery Road. Earlier in the same race,' Mr Duncan Blair, who was riding Blanco, got a nasty bump as the result of his mount cutting through the saddling paddock gate, as the field passed there. Mr Blair came off, and struck the fence, but fortunately sustained no serious injury. Blanco , who was in the lead at the time, looked to have an excellent chance of winning/ as he was jumping well, and appeared as if he would have stayed in front all the way. There were ,a large number of "bookies" present, and theiy laid very fair prices, with the rrsult that they were well patronised. Taken the results on the whole the metallicians ' must have had considerably the best of the deal, as the favourites were beaten in every race except one, and one or two events in which the winners were almost unbacked. The following w.ere the concluding results: — OPEN HACK HANDICAP, of 20 soys; six furlongs. Mr W. Wood's br g CLAIRMONT, 4 | yrs, 9.0, St. Cyr^— Spray.- (Scott) ..:.. 1 Mr G. Smith's br g CLIFTON, aged, j 9.0 (Raynor) 2 ' Messrs Lind and Smith's c g KUROKI, 6 yrs, 10.4 (Lind) 3 Also started: Land o' Cakes, 9.5 (G. Price); Wild Duck, 9.4 (Jenkins); Mereshot, 9.1 (Morris); . The Stripper, 9.0 (Whitehouse) ; Snip, 9.0 (O'Brien). Betting. — 4 to 1 the winner, 3 to 1 Kuroki and Wild -Duck, 6 to'l Land o J Cakes, and 10 to 1 the rest. A capital start was effected/ though Clifton was slow in ~ getting into- his 1 stride. ; Clairmont was ths fiist to sEp,w, in. front, ,and led the field for a furlong, with Kuroki and Wild- Duck close upl A"quarter of a mile from home Kuroki was in front and he led into the straight, but Wild Duck and Clairmont then put in a strong claim, and a most exciting finish was witnessed, the verdict being -in favour of Clairmont by a long neck, with Clifton and Kuroki almost level. Time, lmin 18 2-ssec. LADIES' BRACELET STEEPLECHASE, trophy valued at 10 soys; two miles. Mrs H. J. Cameron's br m SENORITA, aged, by Strenuous — Don Juan mare, 11.3 (Mr D. Blair) 1 Mrs W. B. Giesen's b m JANELLA, 5 yrs, 11.0 (Mr R. Vivian), 2 Also started: Jonquil, 11.7 (Mr B. Gordon); Haerekama, 11.0 (Mr H.- Washer); and Blanco, 11.0 (Mr D. Blair). Betting. — 3 "to 1 the winner and Haerekama, 5 to "2 Blanco, 4 to 1 Jonquil, and 8 to 1 Janella.

From a good start Blanco led over the first couple of jumps, followed by Haerekama and "" Jeweller. Entering the straight Janella took second position, but ran off at the hencoop, and the order . over the double was Blanco; Hae'rekama, - Senorita, and Jonquil,- but the =leader ran' into the saddling paddock, followed byHaerekaina, and Jonquil and Senorita were left to take the sod wall and water jump together. The second wall proved fatal -■ to the chances of the top weight, and Senorita was left to finish the course practically on her own. Haerekama was set going again," while Janella 'also set sail after the leaders, but the former came to grief coming through the Recreation Ground, and Senorita getting over the last two obstacles without mishap won easily. Janella,'.who was the only other contestant to complete the journey, finished second. Time, smin 48sec. HUNTERS' FLAT RACE, of 5 soys; one -mile and a' distance. Mr D. Wilson's b g SHOWMAN, 6 yrs, 11.0, The Workman — Victres3 (Mr . Biggie) _. 1 Messrs Blair and Giesen's b m BETTY, 6 yrs, 11.0 (Mr Coombes) :.... 2 Mr A. Quartz jumped away with the lead, but as they passed the stand Man-in-the-Moon went to the front and led until the back of the course, with Quartz in close attendance. Showman drew up to the leaders a tthe quarter-mile, and a desperate finish was fought out between the placed horses, Showman getting the verdict by a neck, with Mawliiti, who came fast at the finish, half a length away third. Betting.— 2 to 1 Betty, 3 to 1 Quartz, 6 to 1 Dynamite and Man-in-the-Moon, 10 to 1 the others. The betting quotations, were kindly supplied to out representative by Mr A. Law (the well-known Wellington metallician). In the Licensed Victuallers' Steeplechase Jackaroo finished second, but as his rider failed to draw the weight the horse was disqualified, and second place awarded to Haerekama, who ran' third.
