BRISBANE, -August 23.

Passengers by the Taiyuan, from Japan, state that the Japanese have recently suffered great losses of .transports. Several struck mines entering. -Port .Arthur. The' Government" hushed the matter up, and great secrecy was observed, The transporting of the troops and" guns was chiefly done at night. There is considerable distress amongst the poorer classes owing to the war. The people are confident of victory, and the military authorities are opposed to peace.
