THE SIGNBOARD QUESTION.

Proposed Amendment of By-law

At last evening's meeting' of the Borough Council the Mayor brought up the question of signboards. He^ said that under the present by-law, verandahs had to be 11 feet- high, and the signboard must form a portion of such verandah. When Mr Hatrick was Mayor, the Council had passed a resolution giving the height at 10 feet, but it was inoperative as it had no effect on the ' by-law " already in effect, which needed a special order to repeal. In order to meet the difficulty he had framed the following for tho consideration of the Council: —

The Council of the Borough of Wangsw nui hereby makes and passes the following by-law in pursuance of tho powers in that i belief given to such Council by "The Mu- ' nicipal Corporations Act, 1900," and in ' pursuance of all other powers (if any) enabling the said Council in that behalf such by-law to come into force on the day of 190 . 'Repeal: — Sections I- and its sub-sections (1) and (2) of part XIII. of general by-law relating to signboards are hereby repealed, and the following claaises substituted tnerefor: — - ' ! 1. No person -shall place, or project, or use any signboard over any part of any . public or private street from any premiso3 of which he shall be the -owner or occupier, without first having; obtained the consent of th© Council in writing thereto. The application for consent of the Councill shall be in writing, and shall be accompanied by- a plan or slceich showing the sliape anS. general design of proposed signboard. Siich signboard shall confirm to the folldwing named provisions: — ;(1).; (1). The underside of signboard shall not be less than ten feet from the surface of the footpath, and if there be no footpath, not less" than ten feet from the footpath level, as fixed by the Council. (2.) All signboards existing at the date of the coming into force of this by-law, which do not conform to the provisions of sub-section (1) hereof shall, within thirty days of the said date be removed, altered, or re-adjusted by the owner or occu|)ier of the premises from which such signboard projects, -or from which such signboard is hung. " Continuing, ' the Mayor said it was the intention' of the by-law that signboards should be allowed, but not at a less height than 10 feet. At present the heights ranged from 7 to 11 feet, and it was absurd- that such a state of things should be. Under the present by-law, the sign must be part of the verandah, but he thought that this was. rather arbitrary, as in many cases one verandah covered several shops. The Mayur then moved that the amendment'in the by-law, as propbsed by him, be referred to the Works Committee for consideration, and this was agreed to. ,|
