, AUCKLAND, August 22. . The trial of Dr A. H. Orpen on charges of committing two illegal operations, took * place at the Supreme Court to-day. After five hours' retirement the jury failed to agree. A new trial was ordered. ■ • . CHRISTCHURCH, August 22. At the Magistrate's iCourt, Matthew Barnett was fined £5 for having trespassed - on the Riccarton Racecourse on April 24th and for neglecting to . leave after being warned. On a similar charge T. Godfrey was fined £5. .A. Hunt, G. Birchfield, W. Scott, F. Clarke, and W. Livingstone wer© each fined £2 for' a similar ' offence ' at " Plumpton Park on June 10th W.-J.' Black was fined £5. The cases against two men ' were dismissed as they* were acting as clerks to bookmakers, and the regulations ' do not refer to persons so acting.
