DRUNKENNESS IN AUCKLAND.
Mr Lawry has given notice to ask the Minister of Justice: Whether, in view of the statement made by Mr Wesley Spragg at a deputation to the Premier on July 7 last, he will obtain information from the police in the city of Auckland as to how many persons (stating sexes) were lodged in the police cells of that city on the charge of drunkenness on the night of September 10 (presumably last year) — the night on which Mr Spragg alleges that 560 persons, the large majority being young men, "were seen to emerge from hotels "decidedly under tho influence of liquor," and 150 who were reported as "absolutely drunk"; and as to whether the police have any observations to make upon the allegations made by Mr Spragg at the deputation referred to, and subsequently repeated by him in a letter addressed to the Premier under date July 29, 1905, respecting the increase of drunkenness amongst young men iv the city of Auckland? Whether the Minister will take steps to ascertain the names and status, of the persons who acted as enumerators for the Auckland Prohibition and Temperance League on the night of September 10, upon whose reports Mr Spragg bases his allegations ; - and what reliance may be placed upon /the information gathered, in the way indicated in Mr Spragg's letter to the Premier dated July 29, 1905?
