EDUCATION BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the above was held last night, when all the members were present. - CHAIRMAN.— Mr G. S. Bridge was re-elected'chairman-for^the ensuing term. - COMMITTEES.— Members of the different committees were re-elected-TECHNICAL SCHOOL COMMITTEE. — The Wanganui Technical School Committee was constituted as. follows: — Messrs F. M. Spurdle (chairman) and G. Carson, representing the Education Board ; two members to be nominated by the Wanganui School Committee, and one each by the Wanganuf Borough Council, the Builders' Union, the Plumbers' Union, and the Painters' and Decorators'. Unioiu, FINANCE.— The cash statement showed a balance to credit of general account of .£1670 9s 4d, and to credit of maintenance account of JlO2l 2s 4d. RESIGNATIONS.— Makotuku, L. M. Mahoney; Hawera, S. E. Baker. APPOINTMENTS.— Ruahine, Mr C. C. Hill, headmaster; Glen Oroua, Miss Tuf-

LEAVE OF, ABSENCE.— Leave of absence for illness was granted to M. Mellish. E. G. Parker, M. Harris, B. McClure, W. A. Lyon, and H. Roche.

EXAMINATION LEAVE.— Leave of,absence to attend examinations were granted to P. ODea, H. M. Payne, N. G. Armstrong, and JJ. P; Clarkson.

DENLAIE. — A deputation consisting of Messrs Glasgow and Higgie waited on the Board and asked that the school be reopened, as the road was too dangerous to send children to Fordell. — Held over for a month, Mr Pirani to report at next meeting.

KOMAKO.— Mr Stanton waited on the Board on behalf of the settlers at Kamako, asking for a new school. He stated that there was an aid building about three miles away which, the settlers were willing to shift, if the Board would reerect it.— Matter left in 1 the hands of the Chairman.

ACCOUNTS.— Accounts to the amount of J3894 3s 8d were passed for payment.

TURAKINA.— The architect reported unfavourably on the state of the residence at Turakina, stating that •it was inadvisable to sp^end any money on it, as it was very old. and decayed. He also forwarded recommendations re repairs to school. — Decided to undertake repairs to the .school.

FOXTON.— Tenders to be called for building a new school on the quadrangle pattern.

WAVEBLET.— Tenders .to be called for the addition of two rooms.

DAIRYING.— The Chief Inspector reported recommending provision- for instruction in dairying and agriculture in the chief centres, the Board to engage a competent instructor in these subjects,' and suggesting that the.Board confer with the A. and P. and similar associations on the matter. — Left in the hands of a committee consisting of the chairman, Messrs Pirani, Dixon, Carson, and Atkinson, and the Chief Inspector, with power to act.

TRAINING TEACHERS.— Mr Lethbridge to interview the Minister of Education re grant for training of teachers. RIDGE ROAD.— Mr Pirani reported, recommending that the school be erected on the site given by Mr Monteith, and that furniture be sent up- at once for the temporary building, so that the school can be opened by Ist October. — Report adopted. — It was decided to re-name the school Tararaa.

OKAIAWA.— The Board is not prepared to spend .£IOO on septic tanks, but will apply to the Department for that amount. — Building Committee to report on lighting of the school at next meeting. CONFERENCE.— Messrs ' Pirani and Lethbridge were appointed to represent the Board at the "Education Boards' Conference.

ELECTIONS.— It- v.was decided not to endorse the Wellrrigt&n. Board's recommendation to subdivide echication districts into ridings, but to approve of members being elected by Se&qol Committees. FURNITURE.— IfeSas decided to agrees to a suggestion fri>ni v -'the Campbell Street School Committee to* invite tenders for school furniture at Palmerston as well as Wanganui.

WANGANUI.— The Wanganui Committee to be informed that the Board will grant amount saved on account of fencing, and give £1 for £1 for metalling. KOHL — Board cannot appoint commissioners, but will allow gentlemen named to act provided no objection is taken. • EXPENSES.— Miss Mollison to visit Auckland in September, her expenses to be allowed.

TUBANGABERE.— If building suitable the Board will grant amount asked for, and apply to the Department for £2 per annum for rent.

MARTON. — Department to be applied to for grant for building a technical school.

PIRIPIRI. — Application for school referred to Inspector Milne to report upon. CLYDESDALE.— Application to be made to the Department for rent for building used as a school. — Committee to be informed the teacher can only be paid in accordance with the regulations. TAONUI.— The" Committee's proposal to alter the name of the school to Newbury was approved.

RANGlWAHlA.— Enlargements to be proceeded with as arranged. The Department to be asked for a grant should further accommodation be required. PUKEROA.— The Department to be asked for a grant for a 40 school.

RANGIWAHIA.— .£S granted for pack ing iron and material to school site.

SCHOLARSHIP.— Department wrote allowing «T. R. Lockhead's national scholarship to be held at the Feilding High School.

SINGING. — IVTrs Brown was appointed to instruct in singing at Paimerston North. UNIVERSITY RESERVES.— Mr Pirani was appointed to represent the Board at Wellington in connection with the University Reserves Bill if necessary. BUILDING GRANTS.— It was decided to endorse the objections of the North Canterbury Education Board to the present method of distributing the building grants.

ROADS.— The Department of Roads, in *eply to "the Board, stated that the roads around Tiriraukawa school were not now under Government control, and the matter should be brought under the notice of the Rangitikei County Council.

EXAMINATIONS.— The request of the Palmerston High School Board that the Chief Inspector be allowed to arrange for the examination of the High School was acceded to. TECHNICAL SCHOOL. — Permission was given, at tho request of the Chief Inspector, to hold an exhibition of work done under the Manual and Technical School Act towards the end of the year, and to arrange for the billeting of country school children in Wanganui in connection therewith; also to associate Mr Varney and the Technical School Committee with him in the matter.
