CHARGE OF ATTEMPTED MURDER.

AUCKLAND, August 16
A fisherman named William Reid, previously' charged with assaulting Mary Donovan by catching her by the throat, was to-day charged with the major crime of attempted murder on tlie same. The facts alleged are that accused, who kept the woman on a- fishing boat, was drinking hard with others on Sunday lr«t, and in a row on board seized her by the throat and threw her overboard. She screamed, police assistance being at once forthcoming. Accused denied the charge, and said he knew nothing about it. The woman was drunk and fell overboard while crossing over to anothor boat tied to- his own.
The case was adjourned till Friday to enable accused to get further evidence, bail being refused.
