MUTILATION OF DEAD BODIES.
' The Adelaide Sensation The Charges Against Dp Smith. * rests Association.— Telegraph.— Copyright. Beceived September 5, 10.7 a.m. ADELAIDE, September 5. The Board appointed to sift the charges against Dr Eamsay Smith has began its inquiry. The. charges are of mutilating the bodies of dead 'persons so as to shock the public conscience and offend against the criminal law. . Counsel for the Crown stated that there were eighteen Charges against Dr Smith, consisting principally of allegations $mt as City Coroner h& had taken' possession of and' 'mutilated^ dead' bodies, the heads and other portion^ -of "which had been shipped beyond the seas.,
Voluminous correspondence was ' Bubmitted alleging that he had cut off the heads of some and taken the skeletons of other bodies and sent them to Edinburgh.
A letter from Dr Smith pleaded that he had followed the practice recognised and followed throughout the civilised world. What he had done was for the advancement of science, the alleviation of human suffering, and the advancement of hisprofession.
