A torrent twenty-five feet deep and a hundred feet wide burst through the Illinois Central Railway embankment, flooding the southern half of Eastern St. Louis. A thousand labourers engaged in strength- 1 ening the embankment fled. Thirty were drowned. The damage. by fhe floods in St. Louis is estimated at ,£300,000, and 10,000 people have been rendered homeless. '
