Mr Hovey, the American geologist, re-, ports that 1 the' Soufriere eruptions 'during' the past eight months have produced one of the most impressive changes geologically in his experience. The vast amount of ash has eroded the slopes of the mountains, particularly in the valleys of Wallibou and Rabacca. At a moderate estimate 25,000,000 tons has fallen in Wallibou alone, without counting 1 Die washings of the surrounding slopes. He says it is useless to predict the future. The present activity of the volcano pomewhat exceeds that observed by Mr Hovey from 23rd May to 11th June of last year. Whether it presages further eruptions it is impossible to say. The danger zone is, limited to a five-mile radius .from the ridge to Richmond River, and is somewhat less on the leeward side.
