Roses are now afl the zenith of their beauty, and the number of 'varieties' in bloom at Messrs Laird and Sons* .Virginia Nursery (at the top of Halswell Street) are .worth a pilgrimage to see. Amongst the newer ones that are now in flower the following are particularly good: — Fran Karl Druschkii, a pure white H.F., long-pointed buds opening up freely "and in splendid form; Jubilee, very dark velvety crimson, after the style of Victor Hugo, but much -darker; R. E. Eesselstatt, a lovely shade of salmon terracotta, hardy ana . freeblooming; Merrie England, a peculiar and sportive variety, bright pink and almost pure white flowers appearing on the "same plant, and again beautiful intermixtures; Mde. Jules ttrolez, rich pink, long-pointed buds, opening' well, a fine show bloom; Killarney, beautiful, silvery pink, petals shell-shaped, buds long and full, very nne ; ; Billiard and Barre, intense golden yellow, beautiful alike, in the bud or full bloom stage, a lovely variety; Gruss and Teplitz, fine rich velvety crimson, a strong growing and free-blooming- variety; Beryl, deep rich orange yellow, extra lpng pointed buds, a perfect button-hole rose; Bessie Brown — Messrs Laird admit that they were much disappointed with this variety last year,' but this season it has come torth in all its beauty, and is well worthy the high position in which it stands among English growers. There are quite a number of aew \»aridtie§ etill to bloom, and tvhieh will be noted in due course. In the meantime , Messrs Laird and Sons cordially invite public inspection (on Thursday and Saturday afternoons for preference), and we feel sure that a pleasurable and instructive hour might well be spent in looking over the wfcll-kept grounds. The entrance to the Virginia Nursery is in Halswell Street, just over, the railway line.
