Wanganui Orchestrai Club
The attendance: hist evening In the Opera House on the- occasion of the third concort of* the season by the Orchestral Club was minimised by heavy and consistent rain,, but, those present evidently thoroughly enjoyed the wellselected programme. . The members 'of the Club mustered' in full force, and out of respect' to *the "memory bL 'the' late Mr S. H. Drew, mourning badges were *orn, and -"The Dead Mirch in Saul" was effectively- played Sy the orchestra, which was. under the baton of the hon. conductor,' Mr Herbert Collier. Out .of the eleven ilumbera programmed, sit erf them were orchestral pieces^-the? overture, "Marionettes," the- anarch "Turkish Patrol," Beethoven's' Adagio and illegro-,from Symphony in, C, Flotow's overturt "Stradella," -a selection*'from "Patience," Sarakowski'S sparkling dance, and concluding with the',National Anthem: , It was 'pleasurable to nota that in those aboye" mentioned there was every evidence of 'imprbyement, the volume of sound being;excellent throughout, with 'good modulated tone and ' expression, . upon which all those r taking part, are to b& congratulated. If one selection was more, jiopular than the-oih'ers it^.wassthe'l'?rurkish Patrol," this inspiriting inarch being given . in such -an acceptable' manner that sustained applause led to its repetition. The violin, sol o—rk. mazurka by Weniawsld—^contributed by Mis* Claudia Price, was undoubtedly one of the^ems of the evening, and so~ •xpressively 'was it interpreted, tfiat a merited recall led to the Substitution of another equally meritorious number, the charming nature of which also drew. lorth, deserved applause. Miss 'Redmond .(of Wellington) created a most favourable impression, conclusively showing her to be the possessor of a well-trained and highlycultivated "contralto voice, heard to ait vantage in Lane's beautiful song, IXife's Lullaby," and the audience 'clamoring for an encore were rewarded by the rendition of another equally pretty song by the'- 1 same' composer, "Tatters." In the second part, Miss Redmond favored her audience %itfi '.The Gondola' Love Song," which added still further to the lady's vocal reputation, and it is trusted that "it will not be any. length 'of time .ere she' again thus favours a Wanganui stodience. 1 The "only other- vocal rnnnber was "'The Kftg^s Minstrel," by Mr' Wood, who. accepted the inevitable recall and gave with still better effect "Tanity." Mr .Wood has' a good robust baritone voice, and is a decided acquisition to "local musical circles. The violin, solo above referred to was* accompanied by Mrs Ciampett, and the vocal numbers by Mr H. G. Spademan. Taken altogether, the concert was thoroughly enjoyable, and certainly amongst the best yet given by the Ofchestraf Club. "'
