POLITICAL NOTES.

(By Our Parliamentary Special.) ' (By Telegraph). WELLINGTON, July 23. Among the questions notified to-day, there is one drawing attention to the transactions of one. Cook, in floating mining companies and asking if legislation is contemplated? This individual made a report in re J. G. Ward not many years ago. He was then a member of tho firm of Cook and Gray, but I understand is so no more. Another question of pith is whether legislation will prohibit scenery desecration by advertisement.

Tho debate on land settlement was resumed at 10.30 a.m., cutting out the questions. There are now over 90 questions on the Order Paper and the. idea of answering them in print on the Order 'Paper gains ground. The debate is likely to last all day, as many want to speak. It is tho' only subject which members have most seriously tackled as yet.'-

A curious provision in the Education Board's Election Act has just been discovered. The voting papers, electing three new members of Education Boards, reached tho Returning Officer three days ago, but the Act cays he shall open the papers on the fifteenth day "after the election ; therefore the whole thing is stuck up for a fortnight, with the result that the feeling in certain quarters ia strained. Mr Moore, of the Producers' Union, quotes aa "American traveller" as his authority for stating that a European trust, representing threo millions, is trying to systemntioally rob the Australasian, woolgrowcrs and suggests that tin) union of Australasia, Maoriland; and Argentine fight the same. This probably means that there is ono motive for agricultural co-operation. Tho following ' appointments as District Health Officers have been made under the I»ublio Health. Act of last session: — Auckland, Dr Macgil; Wellington, Dr Valentine; Canterbury, Dr Symes; Westland, Dr C. Morice. For Nelson and Morlboroiigh, Dr Roberts; no appdintmont for Otago has yet been made.
