WELLINGTON R C. SUMMER MEETING.
FIRST DAY. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January 22. There was most disagreeable weather for the opening day of tho Wellington Racing Club's Summer Meeting. A high wind was blowing with rain threatening, but fortunately none fell. There waa a record attendance, some, 7000 being present, including the Governor (who prosented the Cup to the winner), the Premier and other members of the Government. The sum of .£14,964 was put through tho machines, as against .£10,427 for tho first day last year. Results: — Anniversary Handicap — Will-o'-the-Wisp 1, Tirade 2, Ideal 3. Also started Strathnairn, Arline, Scdgobrook, Hastings, and Coin. Arlino and Hastings carried on the running for half a mile, but on entering the straight the field closed up, and there was a great race down the straight. Won by half a head. Time, lmin 434 sec. Dividend, ,£8 4s. Maiden Plato—The Hempie 1, Lady Lome 2, Gobo 3. Seabrook, Lady Agnes, Cameo, Rebel and Spider, also started. Lsdy Agnes led for six furlongs, but The Hemirie took charge, and won by nearly a length. Time, lmin 44 4-sseo. Dividend, £0 ss. Wellington Cvp—Djin Djiu 1, Boreas 2, Eosella 3. Also started: Te Hapuku, Advance, and Pitch and Toss. Boreas, ■srho was a hot favourite, lost several lengths at tho start, but was soon with the leaders, and led right round into the straight, with Rosolla and Advance handy. Hero Djin Djin came at him, and tho weight telling on tho favourite, Djin Djin beat him by a length. Timo, 2miu 38sec. Dividend, .£lO ss. Wollesley Handicap—Heiress 1, Beddington and Phooka dead heat for second. Time, 50sec. Dividend, 11 13s. President's Handicap — Will-o'-tho-Wisp 1, Palaver 2, Tirade 3. Time, lmin 57^sec. Dividond, .£8 10s. Hack Handicap—Ruby Twist 1, Puniwai 2, Roseplot 3. Time, lmin 59sec. Dividend, .£9 11s. Nursery Handioap—Tho Shannon 1, Paphoe 2, Melita 3. Time, lmin 1 4-sseo. Dividend, £2 4b.
