THE THIRD CONTINGENT. WELLINGTON PROPOSES TO SEND TWENTY-FIVE MEN. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January 23. The Mayor, in lcsponse to the request of a deputation, agreed to call a meeting re furnishing a quota of the new Contingent. It is proposed to send 25 won at an estimated cost of J2IOO each. The Mayors and members of the district will be asked to co-operate. Several suitable men have already offered to provide their own equipment. MAYOR SUGGESTS MEN SHOULD GO INTO CAMP HERE. The following communications weie sent to Colonel Pole-Penton and the Premier to-day — Borough Council Chambers, St. Hill Street, Wangamii. January 23, 1900. Colonel Pole-Penton, Wellington. Dear sir, — Confirming my telegram to-day roading' — "Applications for enrolment here now exceed 70 , expect over 100 by Saturday, when wo close list. Money for equipment and transport of our Con- , tingciit quite assured. Can you arrange > start passing our men next Monday. Re- I ply so as can advise all applicants." I trust you will qrrangS to give effect to- our wishes, as contained in my telegram. We would also like you to arrange for tlio equipment of our men, that is, clothing, saddles for horses, etc., to be sent on here at once. The men could go into temporary camp here pending being sent on to Wellington. It is only natural that, as my citizens and fellow settlers are finding the men, howes, cost of their equipment, and transport to South Africa, that they wou]d like to see them paraded here at least once horsed and equipped. Your department can draw on me at any time for equipment* charges and transport. We now simply await your Defence Department to take our men and horses off our hands without delay.
