TAKANAKI v WANGANUI.

(By Telegraph— Special to Hkrald.) HA\\ EX V, Jamiaiy 23. The Taranil;i-Waii!».iimi cricket match commenced in Bayly Park, Hawera, yesterday, on a fast mcket in fine weather. Watt won the toss from Bayly and sent in Marshall mid Shannon. McCarthy's first (ncr to Marshall was a maiden. Shannon sent Bayly s second to leg for two. McCarthy, bumping considerably, sent another maiden o\er to Marshall and Bayly one to Shannon. Marshall got a single forward for the last hall of MeC.uthy's third o\er, and another at Bayly's expense. Throe more singles weie added by Maislull, when Shannon called for a short run and almost lost his wicket. The three next overs produced only one run, and then Shannon got Bayly nicely to leg, bringing ten. up for halt an hour's play. Marshall then scored a two and a single to square-leg, and two byes were run, when Quin, in the slips, nicely caught Shannon off Bayly — 16—1—5. 11. B. Cave was the next in. Marshall got McCarthy to tho off for a brace, and Cave opened his account by a single to leg off Bayly. A smartly stolen run brought 20 up for 40 minutes' play. Another single was added by Marshall, and thon Cave was magnificently caught by Hasel in tho slips, off McCarthy— 2l 2—l. K. H. Cave, took his brother's place, and got a single each off Bayly and McCarthy to square-leg. Three byes were then run oil a shooter past Marshall from Bayly. (By Our Special.) The Taranaki team included six New Plymouth players, and was a good representative combination. Messrs J. Ooodson and J. P. Watt acted as umpires. Eesuming the play yesterday afternoon, with the scoro at 29, Cole took McCarthy's place, who relieved Bayly at tho other end. K. IT. Cave got McCarthy to leg for three, and immediately afterwards sent Cole through the slips foi four, bringing 40 up. He again got Colo to leg for two, and beautifully hit him to the on for four. Marshall cut McCarthy to the fence for three, and Cavo treated Cole in a similar way, bringing 50 up. Marshall then drove Cole hard for three, and Hassell relieved McCarthy. The new bowler sent down some slows , the last one of the over Marshall banged to the leg boundary. A late cut at Cole's expense brought 60 up. Cave added two 2's, and each a single, and then Marshall hit Hazel to the boundary, and 70 appeared. Pratt relieved Cole, and Bayly replaced Hazel. Cavo got Bayly's first ball to the leg boundary, and Marshall prettily late cut tho next. He attempted a second run, and failed. 80—- 3— 33. The outgoing batsman had been an hour and 35 minutes at the wickets. Meldmm partnered Cave, and got a snick through the slips for two. Cave got an uppish boundary hit off Pratt, and Meldrum ran one for a nice on stroke, well fielded by Lash. Meldruns then cover-drove Bayly to the fence, and 90 were posted. Immediately after Meldrum miss-hit one from Pratt to Colo at point. 9] — 4—6. Watty was next in, and got a two behind the wickets. Cave meanwhile was adding slowly but surely to his score. Watty hit Bayly to the on boundary, and a single by Cave brought 100 up in just five minutes under two hours. Watty got another through the slips, and then made a big hit off to Pratt to the on boundary, which Lash, running some distance, splendidly took. 103 — 5—7.5 — 7. Boyes next faced tho music, McCarthy relieving Bayly. Boyes immediately sent a fast one from Pratt to Hassell'fe hands in the slips, and retired. 104 — 6—o.6 — 0. Skipper Watt was next on the scene, and Cave got Pratt nicely to leg for three, but two balls later Pratt retired Watt with a "bailer." 108 — 7—o.7 — 0. Luxford then camo in, and three byes were run, causing 110 to bo posted. Lusford thon got McCarthy to leg for three. With the score at 114, K. Cave went forward to Pratt, and McCarthy just succeeded in getting one hand under the ball. 117 — 8—47.8 — 47. Tho outgoing batsman had played a long, steady innings without an actual chance. W. B. Cave took his brother's place, and got a single to the off, one to tho on, and then cut Pratt for two, bringing 120 up. The next ball the same batsman hit over long off for three. Luxford nicely glanced Cole to the boundary, and L. Eliot replaced Pratt at the bowling crease — an apparently unnecessary change, as Pratt was bowling well, and had taken five wickets for 18 runs. Cave hit Eliott to leg, bringing 130 up, and Luxford got another boundary through the slips. Braund (left-hander) took the ball from Cole. In Eliott's next over Cave played one on. 135 — 9—ll.9 — 11. Tompkins was the last man, and both he and Luxford were scoring well when the latter made a bad stroke to the on off Ehott, which Colo took, and the innings closed for 144. The fielding of the Taranaki men was smart. The wicket at tho northern end played very badly, the balls rising dangerously . Taranaki started with Pratt and Elliot, H. B. Cave and Watty bowling. Elliot got two to leg off Watty, then Pratt a single, and Elliot another brace. Pratt late- cut Watty to the boundary and hit him to the on fence, bringing 10 up in about six minutes' play. Elliot then got a boundary to leg off Cave, Pratt a single off the same bowler. Pratt cut Watty for a single. Elliot hit him to the square-leg boundary and Pratt late cut tho next ball for three, bringing 20 up. Pratt then gpt on to Cave and hit him to leg for three and Elliott scored a single. Watty bowled a maiden. Pratt drove the first of H. B. Cave's next ovot for a single, but the second ball broke through Elliot's defence. 27—1—12. Jjash (New Plymouth) partnered Pratt and opened with a uico drive. Boyes relieved Watty and Pratt cut the second ball to the fence, bringing 30 up. Lash scored another single from a drive and then late cut Cavo for 2,and 1. Off Boyes' next over he gave Watt a difficult chance which was declined. He then, made a fin© drive for 3 off Cave, and 40 appeared on the board. Boyes 1 next over was fatal to Lash as he tipped one to H. B. Cave in thf slip. 44 — 2—lo. Haseel was next in and at once gavo a cha.nce to Watt, which was not taken. Each bat scored a single and then Pratt, just touching one from H. B. Cave, was splendidly taken by Bcye3. 26 — 3— 2' i. McCarthy and liaw-el now became associated and started to knock tho bowling about. Meldrum relieved Cave, but still runs came, and it wai not until 90 had been posted that Hassel gave K. H. Cave a chance, off Boyes, and paid the penalty. 90—4 — 23. This bateman exhibited some very fine stickes and some weak ones. Wakelin joined McCarthy, on\y to lose the latter, whe was given out l.b.w. to Meldrum. go — 55 — 19. Skipper Bayly ne^t came out but immediately Wakelin tipped Boyes (who was now maintaining a fine length) to Meldrum. 90—6—0. Mannix joined his skipper, and six runs were added before the former tipped a fast on" from Boyca which. Moldram just touched, but which Tompkins managed todet under in time. 96—7—2.
