THE THIRD CONTINGENT.

LETTER FROM MR G. G. STEAD. CHRISTCHURCH, January 22. Mr G. G. Stead writes to the Christohurch papers:—lt is generally conceded that more mounted men are urgently needed to assist the infantry in South Africa. The Government of New Zealand, although willing, is unable to send more mon at present, as the cost of the Becoiid Contingent has exhausted all the funds that were available. Various centres in New Zealand, however, have colleotod large sums towards the Patriotic Funds, Horso Funds, etc. What more patriotic use can these funds be put to than by each centre equipping units of troops to form- a third Contingent? England does not require money, but she does sadly require mounted troops. What is the use of our remitting- money to England which is not required, when it could be well s£ent hore in assisting to provide mon and horses which are required? Cabling money to England is wasted effort. Sending mounted men is rendering invaluable assistance."
