SEVENTH ANNUAL GATHERING.

The surfeit of sports meetings held of late in Wanganui, together with the fact that there were sevcial counter .ittractions 111 the shape of picnics and that the weather seemed unsettled, had tho effect of diminishing the attendance at the Wanganui Caledonian Society's &poit& meeting, held on Victoria. P.nk to-day. The nominations for (he various events weie quite up to expectations, exceedingthose iDeehed last year. Amongst the athletes nominated wore sonic prominent liiiincrs, including Somcra fKckland), who ran co well at Feilding, Tnylor and Collins (Wellington), Eaynes nud Gilii.our (New Plymouth), and Watts (Feilding); while the cyclists were leplesented by such men as Tierney and Diaffin (Auckland), O'Sullivan (Thames), Clark!>oii (Palmerston), Forbes (New Plymouth), in addition to local men of mark in tho cycle racing world. There ivus a good muster of tho clans, there being over two dozen dressed in Highland costume, including somo eight or ten pipers. Amongst them we noticed Chieftan Hector M'Kenzie, of the Hawke's Bay Highland Society, Mr Charles MeGlashan (champion cornet player and conductor of the Napier Garrison Band), and representatnes from Wellington, Wairarapa, Southland, Paliiatua, Himterville, Feilding, Marton, Makmkiri, and Wanganui. The officials were all at their appointed places, and particular mention may be mado of tho secretary (Mr W. R. Remington), the sports conductors (Messrs W. P. Stuart and T. M. Copeland), the starter (Mr J. G. McNaught), and the assibtant starter and hancheapper (Mr J. 11. Purnell). The booth was in charge of Mr W. Poole, and Mr W. S. Duetin supplied refreshments and luncheon. Following aie the results. — 100 Yards Flat Handicap — First Heat — B. Baynes, i yds, 1 , H. N. Beasley, 9 yds, 2, E. Payuo, 7 yds, .1. Fout others started. Hunt, on tlio limit mark (230 yards), led for a mile, and the men were all bunched when but two laps had to go, Coe riding Uet. On entering the straight for the last lap Tierney led, with O'Sullivan and Coo in good positions. Tierney increased his lead, and won by ten yards, Coe getting into third position coming up the straight. Time, smin 3sec. 220 Yards Handicap (Caßh)— First Heat-^-B. Raynes, 27 yds, 1 ; R. P.
