The Taranaki Herald. [PUBLISHED DAILY.] MONDAY, JANUARY 22, 1900. CAPTAIN REID'S CASE.
. » Thb Auckland Star's Wellington correspondont had a short interview with Premier Seddou on Saturday, during which he asked Mr Seddon whether he could sicalo anything officially regarding Captain Reid's ease. Mr Seddon replied . — "Major Crndock reported that Captain iteid, in his opinion, was unqualified to command a large body of man in the field. The Commandant of the Forces confirmed this opinion, and I approved of Captain Rcid'a resignation. It is not the case, as stated in the Times on Saturday morning, that the Ministry will advise His Excellency not to cancel the appointment. The Government recognise that Captain Reid has made some sacrifices, and as the colony is depleted in cavalry instructors, owing to the absenco of Robin aud Davis with the hist Contingent, and tho resignation of Colonian, Captain Reid will be offered a position as cavalry instructor. It must be distinctly borne in mind that in making this oiler the Government simply do so in recognition of Captain Reid's sacrifices and his desire to serve the country in the held, but not as an admission that Major Cradock has acted harshly."
