CRICKET.

VICTORIA v. UNITED THURSDAY.

The wicket prepared for this crame was very fiery, and got worse as the match went on, the result being that though thero were one or two good bcorej, tho majority of the batsmen utterly failed. Tho out-field was 111 a very bad state, indeed, and it hccma very imi>rob.>l>)e that tho Association will be able to got it in anything like a decent state so as. to enable the Victorian match to be played there. This is not a. very creditable Btatc of affairs for the controlling body of that ground, which has under its care what ought to be about tho best ground in town, but which is, as a matter of fact, tho worst, and is deteriorating each year. During the afternoon Boyes had to retire to the doctor's care with a badly cut cheek, but pluckily returned to the creaso after having his wound dressed, while C'urrie was also temporarily disabled by a Bcveic blow on tho face, both accidents being due to bumping balls. The Victorias started batting, and disasters came thick and fast. Gordon, .Sannders and Curne were dismissed without scoring, the only score being a biaee from Watt Parkes added three by a nice leg-hit, and was given leg-bsfore to Boyes. Four for 7. Andrews joined Watt, and helped to stop the rot, scoring in a style peculiaily his own, while W.xtt lifted Boyes out ol the ground for 5. Watty, 'however, got a good one past Andrews. Five for 21. Naylor ioined Watt, and, both playing fiee cricket, made the stand of the day. A double change was tried, Laiking .md Stuait going on in place of Watty and Boyes, and at last Watt put one from Larking into Ryburn's hands. 72—6—30. Bell was next in, but soon lost Naylor, who was caught 111 the slip^ off Stuait. 74— 7— 22. Bell hit out for 11, but was beaten by Larking. None of the other batsmoii did much, and the innings closed for 89. Watty (four for 16) was tho best of the bowlers. Boyes and Watty opened, but Boyes soon had to retire hurt, and Rybiirn took his place. Soon nfter Watty was bowled by Alcorn. Stewart was the new man, and both batsmen got doubles, but could get no further, being beaten by Parkes and Sannders respectively. Both batsmen played well, though Sauudcrs was pitching shoit and was bumping dangerously. The neit few batsmen added very few, the analysis reading four for 47 and nine for 03, and it looked as if Parkes, who was bowling in fine stylo, was going to get a phenomenal average, but the last two men, Ansley and Watson, got together and made a great stand, putting on 33 for the last wicket. Both batsmen, after tho fiist few overs, treated all bowlers with scant respect. At length Alcorn goi one past Ansley, the total reading 96, or 7 ahead of iha Victoria's total. Parkes fsix for 23) was the most successful bowler. The match will be continued on Thursday week, and as tho game is in a very interesting condition, the finish should bo an exciting one.
