ternoon received the following cable fiom Capetown- — "In a gallant charge of tho New Zealandors, Troopors Council (of Auckland) and Goiirley (of Dunedin) were killed." J. Council joined from the Auckland College Rifles, aged 23. He was a son of late Mr J. Aitfcen Gonnell. DUNCDIN, January 17. Sorgc?nt Samuel Goi.iley, the member of the contingent killed in"Houcli Africa, was a son of the Hon. Hugh Gourley. He •vas 29 yctiva of age. On leaving school he joined tho roportiu? staff of the Globo ovening paper, tl'.im in existence in Dunjdin. Ho afterwards held a position in tho office of the National Mutual Life Association. About four years ago he was selected from a number of others for .-, clerkship with the Otago Harbour Board. He had been a member of the Otago Huaßars for three years, and rose to tho rank of corporal. Ho was always looked upon as one of the coming; men of tho Hussars, And was exceedingly popular, both in hii office and among the Hussars and Ilis friends.
