EXCURSION FARES.

It is a wise provision of a paternal Government that extends to all its employees, in whatsoever department they may be encaged, an annual holiday, and for this tho civil sorvants havo just causo to be thankful. If, however, certain other privileges were extended to them, thero would be cause for further thankfulness, and the holidays would frequently be passed more enjoyably. It is but natural that there should be an almost universal desire to secure the holidays at Christmas, but in some departments of tho service this is impossible, as this period is the busiest time of the year. Particularly is this the case in the Postal and Telegraph Departments, and consequently those engaged have to wait their turn and take their holiday when circumstances permit. At Christmas time cheap excursion fares are issued by the Government on the railways throughout the colony, and many public servants aro debarred from obtaining the privileges which are secured by only tho favoured few. It has been suggested, and wo think the suggestion worthy the consideration ot the Government, that the excursion fares might be extended for tho benefit of those who are unable to take advantage of them during Christmas and Now Year. We feel sure that such a concession would be highly appreciated by the Service generally, and we recommend the suggestion to tho ■consideration of the new Minister for Railways, the Hon. J. G. Ward.
