At high tide yesterday morning the sea broke through a gap thirty feet wide east of the central battery, flooding tho lowlying sections in tlie neighbourhood to the extent of perhaps half tho bulk of the last iirioad. The Public Works Department is erecting a barricade across the gap. Thewoik is finished except this opening of thirty feet.

It also cut away a large slice out of the sandhills at the St Clair end, and is eating into the properties on the Esplanade.
