THE FLATS.

/ TO ME EDITOR,

Sin, — I see by the report in this morning's paper that the Captain of tho Oreti, in reply to a question stated that he was quite sure his steamer was not out of the channel when she stuck. If this is co, how did the Moa heavily coal laden pass the Oreti and stiok on the flats where they were lately dredged ? I might also ask Captain Robertson how he reconciles his statement that " vessels now stiok lower down in the same depth of water we had before?" If this is true it must be that the vessels are drawing more water. We have spent many thousands in dredging with the result that vessels still Btick on the flats. Does this not prove that we have been deepening the river at the wrong end? — I am, etc., Common Sense.
