(Before His Honor the Chief Justice Sir James Prendergast.) The Supreme Court sittings commenced this morning at 11 o'clock. ORAKD JDRY. The following Grand Jurors were empannelled: — Walter Armstrong, J. G. Bruce, Wm. Rodwell, James Anderson, T. D. Cummins, C. W. Reardon, Geo. Bruce, E. N. Liffiton, Thos. Allison, T. B. Williams, Lewis Bayly, J. D. Greig, G. W. Booth, Geo. Caiman, A. Higgle, J. C. Paterson, A. B. Sheriff, E. A. Campbell, Wm. Strachan, J. F. Cntfield, J. A. Young, H. S. G. Harper, Edward Tingey and E. W. Morse.- Mr Campbell was chosen foreman. His Honor said the cases for the consideration of the Grand Jury were such as needed no comment from him. They were in the habit of dealing with similar cases, and he could give them no assistance. TBUE BILLS wore retnrued in all cases set down for hearing, viz: — Eliza O'Driscoll, perjury ; ■Frederick Cartriglit, breaking and entering; William Henry Cooper, peijury ; John Cameron, horse stealing; James Diggs, theft ; James Laask and Wiliiam Thomas, sheep Btealing; Percy Tucker Robinson, carnally knowing girl under 16. THEFT. John Cameron, alias John Campbell, . alia* John Young, alias John Canning, pleaded guilty to stealing, a mare, saddle nna bridle^ from John O'Halloran at Huuterville on 21st February. Prisoner was remanded till 10 o'olock to-morrow morning for sentence. BREAKING AND ENTERING. Frederick Cartwright was charged with committing burglary by breaking and entering the dwelling house of Hekenui Eikiona at Okakate on October Ist, 1897, and with stealing therefrom a quantity at articles, inolnding a gun and accoutrements, two gold-mounted greenstone earrings, greenstone, blanket, 401bs eugar, clothing, tobacco, and tools. The accused pleaded guilty to housobreaking, and the Crown decided not to proceed with the other charges. Mr Meldrum appeared fcr the prisoner, and stated he desired to Bay a few words on his behalf. , Prisoner was remanded till 10 to-morrow morning. PHEEP-STEAHNG. James Leask and William Thomas pleaded guilty to. stealing a ewe from Joseph Francis Studholme at Ruanui on the 251h of March, 1898. Mr Meldrum appeared for prisoners. Sentence was deferred till to-morrow - morning. ALLEGED PEMCHY. Eliza O'Driscoll was indicted on a charge of committing perjury, on the hearing of an action, before Mr C. C. Kettle, S.M., at ' the Magistrate's Court, Wanganui, on 30th August, 1897, in which Kate Galvin was plaintiff and Eliza O'Driscoll defendant, by swearing to the effect that Kate Galvin come to lodge at her boardinghouse on March Ist, 1897 ; and also that the particulars of amounts alleged to be due by Sate Galvin written in a certain document dated Ist August, 1897 (produced on the hearing, of the action), were obtained from the account of Eliza O'Driscoll against Kate Galvin iv a ledger kept by Eliza O'Driscoll at her boardinghouse at Mangaweka ; and also that the particulars of amounts written iji a certaju tpttejc produced on the Jjeavjng of the acI'ion'wfere taken from the account written in tlle'ledger'of iliza O'Driscoll ; and also j}jat the ledger' had written 'therein an jicconht- against pate Galyin, showing a charge for board and lodging from thelst of March, 189^ to' the 13th 6f April, 1897 > anfFajso tljaf Bliga p'Driscoll had paid gais'Galvin tlie sum of £3 3s Gd on the 13th of April, 1897, and that the said Kate Galvin had given a stamped receipt for the same. Accused pleaded not guilty, and was defended by Mr Hankhis, Mr Gifford Marshall conducted the case for the Crown. The following jury were einpannelled— E. Chatwin, W. J. Blake, A. A. Gower, T. Bunliug, G. Randal, A. J. White, F. Sarten, G Larking, G. Purnell, R. J. J. Simpson, R. Bunting, J. Jenkins. Mr Blake was chosen foreman. In opening the case fov the Crown, Mr Marshall derailed the circumstances of 'the case, and stated that after accused had given her evidence in the lower Court in the case of Galvin v O'Driscoll, the Magistrate asked,her if she would have any objection to sign a telegram authorising Constable Black to procure the ledger and other books at her boaidinghouse at Mangaweka. She said she had no objection, but, when the telegram was written out she refused to sign. Before accused reached home the constable had procured the ledger and searched it carelully, with the result that no entry was found in i£ referring to Miss Galvin. In another B6ok, however, ah account similar 't& the one produced in Court was found. Mr ' Marshall concluded his opening remarks by stating that he 'would call witnesses to prove ihat Miss Galvin did not go to Mangaweka till 15th March. ? The case is proceeding as wego to press.
