THE KAURI GUM COMMISSION.

Wellington, March 29. The Kauri Gum Commission report that up to last year the industry had yielded over eight millions of money and contributed nothing to the revenue of the country, although tho soil was destroyed and a large expenditure necessitated on roads. The Austrians on the field are described as hardy, sober, and industrious men, who from their knowlelgeof vine and olivo culture would make good settlers if they stayed. Plenty of them earn £3 to £5 a week. The Commission recommend that no ono except a settler be allowed to hold a gum diggers' license till after 12 months' residence iv the colon j. An export duty should be imposed of £3 to £5 per ton , and no holdor of a publican's HoeW'should be allowed to deal in gum.
