At the University boat race a north■casterly wind was blowing and the river terribly rough. A postponement of the Tace was deemed probable nntilatlastthe boats were filled with air bladders to present their being swamped, Oxford won the toss and selected the Middlesex side, which was more sheltered. •Cambridge was first away and led by a quarter of a length at the Duke's Head, but at Clasper's sheds the boats were level. Oxford begun to draw out and at Ham. mersmith Bridge had a four length's lead. Cambridge were now in difficulties, and suffered from the heavy water, their boat lolling considerably. 'Tie Cambridge boat was nearly full of water, and tlie crew stopped in an exliausted condition off the Ship. The Oxford boat, which shipped less ■water, passed the winning post twelve lengths ahead in 22min 15sec.
