The Taranaki Herald. [PUBLISHED DAILY.]

SATURDAY, MARCH 20, 1898.

MR OAE3ON JUBILANT.

It is _ very easy to see by the Chronicle that its editor is very jubilant at the difficulty in which the Liberal party here is placed with regard to inducing a suitable candidate to come forward at the next Parliamentary election to defsnd the Liberal platform. Mr Carson's organ persists in stating that this difficulty is caused by the Liberals having lost faith in Mr Seddon as their leader, but this is not the case, as the Opposition will find out when next they have to face the polls. The diffi culty in persuading a strong candidate on the Liberal side to contest the Wanganui seat lies in the fact that no suitable candidate on that side caH, as yet, be induced to give up the time necessary, to the neglect of his private affairs. This is' the real reason of the difficulty, and not the lo3s of faith in Mr Seddon, as our contemporary asserts. That a suitable person will be found when the time comes we have every rea son to believe, as also that the Liberals are quite numerous enougk in this electorate to defeat the Conservative representative, who is feverishly anxious to persuade them that he is a Liberal, 'fills latter is also the Tvisk of the present members of the Opposition, who have frequently in the llouso and on the public platform made the same claim, only to be treated with derisive laughter from the Liberal party throughout the country, who are clear-sighted enough to see that a Conservative wolf, even in the fleece of a Liberal sheep, is only wishful tt don that disguise, in order to scatter tho whole flock and destroy the party. We are willing to believe that Mr Carson and some of his, Conservative friends would be very willing to join the Liboni'. party if they thought that by doing so they would ensure thoir own politic il advancement, as thoy aro mainly desirous of attaining the goal of their ambition, which is a seat on the Treasury benches. Thoy can see plainly that to gain that object they must make friends with the Liberal side, as the electors of the colony are by a large majority determined to prevent the affairs of New Zealand again being mismanaged by a Con= servative Ministry. It is an awkward position for Mr Carson ( we admit, but id is one ho will find it very difficult to escape from. That he will have to fight for the seat he now occupies is certain, as it is not to be supposed the Liberal party here are going to sit down and allow him tho luxury of a walk-over next election. In the meantime he may rest assured, that when the time conies for that trial of strength, a Libeml candidate will be forthcoming, who will bo suppoited by the whole strength of the party, which means that the Conservatives will, in all probability, lose the seat.
