NBAMATAPOURI NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) At last the weather has broken, and the rain is welcome not only for the sake of the feed, but also for its effeot upon the tires, of which almost every clearing had its share. Although the season hag ' been so dry, and it has been about the driest experienced since the valley was settled, beyond the loss of a few odd chains of fencing there has been no damage from the fires, though the southerly breeze that preceded the rain was blowing them up rather more than was pleasant. The Eev. C. Tisdall, the vicar in charge of the district, has, by dint of much tact and energy, gone far to place the ohurch on a sound footing, and at the same time he has practically solved the school problem. 'After the last service at Ngamatapouri the vicar announced that he had completed the proposed purohase of a church site, and that the next step was the appointment of a committee to provide ways and means. A committee of seven was thereupon chosen, viz^ Messrs A. Smith, Parkinson, Armstrong, Braithwaite, James, Liffi ton, and Haddow, with the vicar as chairman ex qfficio. One of the number was appointed secretary. Mr Tisdall has infused a touch of his own enthusiasm into his parishioners, and the committee apprehend no difficulty in raising the necessary funds. It is intended, when the church is erected, to permit its use as a school until a proper school building is available, and then it is to be hoped education will be on a better footing iv the district than it. is at present.
