WANGANUI REGATTA.

The Maori Canoe Races.

The continuation of Thursday's programme of Maori canoe race 9 took place on Saturday afternoon, consisting of nine events, which we aye pleased to state proved an unqualified success. The attendance, considering the state of the weather and being market day, was large, 200 persons contributing their mite in support of the committee's efforts to augment the sports funds. The management wa3 excellent, when one considers the ideas Maoris always hold in regard to time and distance. The " fiolds " were large, and the finishes in many cases were intensely exciting. The chief item of interest was the Canoe Hurdle Race, which brought out a field of 11 canoes, manned by two men each. It was decided to get this event off in three heats and a final. Each heat was very keenly contested, and caused much amusement to the general public. It is safe to say that nevjr has the River Bank resounded with so much merriment (>.nd laughter as it did on Saturday after- ' noon. Tho results were :— Moutoi Handicap — Kauaeroa 1, Tiupiri 2. Jddilee Handicap— Kauaeroa 1, Manntaki 2. Hurdles— lst heat, Putiki ; 2na heat, Aramoho ; 3rd heat, Parakino ; final heat — Aramoho 1, Parakino 2. I Boys' Race— Kauaeroa 1, Whakaihuwaka2.
