A SUGGESTION.

TO THE EDITOR,

Sib, — Might I suggest tp the agents for landlords and landlords acting for tbuinselves (who own property in Wanganui) the desirability of ban ling togothor to pre. serve the respeotability and reputation of our town, by seeing that tha class of tonant enquiring after house accommodation will neither be a nuisance totheneighbourhood nor a disgrace to the looality, which, in other words, means depreciation in value of surround ing property, and eventually loss to the Borough revenue, while such tenancy exists. What has 'prompted the suggestion is the fact that several of the oldest shanties (which a bylaw should condemn, as unfit for European occupation) still exist in the Borough, and are a menace, not only to the adjoining property owners, but particularly to insurance companies holding risks on them— (as the true value of the buildings is the amount that can be raped, at auo ; tion' on tlje roof iron, a matter of £5 or so at the outside)— and' the qnly class qf tenant that will occupy'them is the dirty, opium -sinoking Q n 9 w : A b,atcl) of tljese Asiatics l)aye recently taken up their residence, in such a shanty as I have mentioned, near the Police Station — it is hard to say how many of them — but they swarm in like bees after nightfall, aud the neighbours on both sides are kept awake all night by their "inoessent jabber and row. I doubt whether any of our worthy agents would wilfully cause a nuisance and menace (such as the present) to the ratepayers, insurance companies, andborpugh, and hope the position of affairs , will at once be altered. — I am, etc.,

Ratepayer.
