As at the previous spring meeting the enjoyment of yesterday's outing was considerably marred by the rain that oontinued falling after the Derby had been run. Ihe interest, however, in the different events did not flag, as proved by the sum put through the maobines— £4742, as against £8889 on the first day of lait vear*s spring meeting. It was evident that some of the horses competing were out for an airing, this being particularly notioeable in the opening event, in whioh one horse at least did not run up to his true form- Mr J Henry, the well known handicapper, was present during the day with a view of watohing the form displayed. It wai a peculiar thing that out of the large number of marei starting none of them accounted for a single event. ThA time for the Derby— 2min 41 8-sth soo— is the fastest yet recorded for that race, boatinn Blarney's time by 1 4>6th seo. The music discoursed by the Garrison Band came in for a good deal of favourable com* ment, one well known authority stating that he always heard better musio on the Wanganui course than any other in the oolony. The betting throughout the day was ' evenly divided, and consequently the dividends on thq whole were very fair. Ihe following events were deoided alter we went to rlress : Handicap Hack Race, of 40 soys; second horse to receive 10 soys from the stakes: distance, 1 mile and a distance ; weights not less than 7st 711> ; winner of Trial Hack Handicap to carry a penally of 51b. . 238— MrThos Seoifs br ?
