THE UPPER WAITOTARA.
TO THE BDIIOB. Sin, — Absenoa from this diitrirb hag prevented mo rrom refuting the oitraoidinnry allegations sent to you by Mr T. W, Fiehoi 1 on tha 27th of February last. Ho states that the Waitota.'a Vallay dray voad would have been made two years ago if the TaranaM aottlera had coma forward and rawed a loan o£ £1350 to make 4[ miles of road in the Wellington district, and that 10 is entirely owing to their shortulghtodne33 that thoy are lott with n miserable liorso traok. Now, Mr Fishor'a fads aro very much twisted, the roal facts are tia iollowa : — Sottlers holding an aroi of 41,000 acres m tho Wellington district raised a loan to make 10£ miloa of main road up to the Taranaki boundary, but only enough money was raised by thorn to niako it Bii railoa. Now, Mr Fisher had tho siudaoity to ouggest, aa a councillor, that the five small settlors in the Taranaki district should, besides paying 53 6d per acre for a road from the boundary lino up rivor, come into the Wellington Province, sacrifice tLoir thirds, and not only that, but pui, their hands into their pockets fot a further Bum, amounting to some 2s 7d po* acre ; that is to say, tLat Mr Fiohor oxpecta five' Taranaki settlors, holding 4712 acrsa, to mako 184 miles of main road, whilst Bovontosn settlors, owning 41,000 acres, should only make some en miles, after admitting theii' liability to curry the road on ta tho boundary 4J miles furthev. I only wish at present to pom*; out the unfairness oE Mr T. W. Fisher's arguniecto, and if an unfortunate Taranaki settler could be allowed to offer Mr Fisher advica, ifc would ba to look up a certain seition of tho Civil Service regulations relating to public correspondence.— I am, &c, Wnuiu vok Aaca.
