RIVER OBSTRUCTION.

The Maoris Again Interfering With

the Works.

Mr J. T. Stewart, Chairman of the Bivar Trust Board, received ward on Saturday that a small section of the Maoris had again obstructed the rivnr works.

Seeing the groat importance of opening up the river for navigation between Manganui* O'te-au so as to give access to the river above this leading to the Tangurakau, tho Wanganui Bivor Trust Board at its last meeting let a contract to Mr Cnbb to do certain work on tho rapids above Pipiriki. The contractor started work at ones but hat since been stopped by the natives there; who refused to allow him to proceed, and in addition have damaged part of tho work completed. As the river is low and the season favourble to work is now short, this delay is very unfortunate

On Saturday evening Mr A. D, Willis, M.H.R., telegraphed to the Premier on the subject, and police have alao been communicated with, and it is hoped their action may, as <n a previous caso, induce the Maoris to abstain from further obstruction.
