POLICE STATION AND SHELTER SHED.

These hss been some surprise and disappointment that the Maori shelter shed and police building* have not been more rapidly proceeded with. We learn from our member, Mr Willis that with regard to the former he has done everything possible, and that no blame whatever rests with the Department, but that the delay lies with the local bodies in Wanganui. The agreement for the leasiog of the land on tho foreshore has now fceon forwarded to the Harbour Board, and immediately it if signed tha Public Works Department have promised Mr Willis that they will proceed to have it ereoted with the lea>t poieibla delay. With regard to the police buildings, Mr Willis his been in. constant communication with the Public Works Department, and has done all in his power to hurry on their erection: In answer to hi* latest communication, the Departmont replie*, under date of August 1st — "Referring to the enquiries which you have from time to time made with regard to the Wanganui Police station, I have now to say that tender*, for the supply of the timber required for the buildiDg will b» aoceptod to-day, and that as soon as a sufficient supply of material is on the ground the work of erection will ba commenced under the co-operative principle. Thera has been no delay in connection with this building, that could have b«en reasonably avoided. No doubt it could have boen proceeded with more expeditiously if wo had no other works at all in hand, but with th* Ttry larg* number of buildings and railway construction works in hand at tha preient tim*, it was impossible to attend to thi* one any earlier." We are pleased to find the building* so urgently required are likely to be soon commenced, and we are sure Mr Willis it to be complimented for tha persiif enoy with whioh he has advooated their erection.
