WANGANUI WOMEN'S POLITICAL LEAGUE.
The Wanßanui Women's Franchisee
league is no more, having transformed itself on Friday afternoon last into a political combination; not for the purpose of running a candidate, however, but for the much more sensible one of furthering the political education of its members. Measures, not men, are to be tho subjects of the League's debates, by which course the possibility of friction will be avoided, and the League become a rendezvous for women of all shades of political opinion. At Friday's meeting it was decided, on the motion of Miss Harrison, that the Leaeue be in future known by the name of the "Wanganui Women's Political League," and on the motion of Miss Steadman, it was resolved that its object be " To promote the political education of women generally, to improve the economic* position of women, and to take up women's questions as they arise." It was further resolved on the motion of Mrsßullock that the League be a non-party organisation. The meeting was informed that two members of the League had been appointed by the local Registrar, acting on instructions from Wellington, to canvass tho district for the pnrpoes of facilitating the registration of the feminine portion of the community. The money received for this work is to be devoted to a library fund, and, on the motion of Mrs Williamson, it was decided to form a library of politioal and kiudred works, and Mesdames Williamson, Worgan, Curry, Bullock, Price, and Misses Stoadman, »nd Montgomery were elected as a Committee of Management. A motion of Mrs Stewart, That the secretary be instructed to endeavour to obtain the co-operation ot other Leagues for tho purpose of securing an alteration in the Education Act to enable wives, as wall as husbands, to vote for Bohool committoM, was carried, after which two interesting readings were given, and, the secretary having been authorised to write a letter of crndolonco to the family of the late Mrs John McGregor, whoso kindly qualities and cheerful interest in the prosperity of the League were feelingly dwelt upon by Mrs Hurley and the chairwoman, the meeting terminated.
A writer in the Pahiatua Herald says :—: — F, Pirani, journalist, Palmereton North, and Walter Nicoll Oathro, solicitor, Rangiora, aie both aspirants to Parliamentary \ honors in the next election. Both candidates ,Rerved their apprenticeship in tho Wanganui Hbßald Office as printers under the late John Ballance, and it would have been exceedingly gratifying to Mr Ballance, if he had lived, to see his two apt apprentioes following iv his footsteps.
